Junior Tennis Coaching

Play Tennis is proud of the quality of the tennis programme run for junior players. Our tennis program is designed and led by Rhys McDougall, Director and Head Professional Tennis Coach at PlayTennis and is endorsed by Tennis Hotshots, Tennis Australia. Rhys has successfully coached players from junior level to Davis Cup standard over the last 30 years. In 2017, Rhys was voted Tennis Coach of The Year, WA.

All coaches at PlayTennis care about your child’s tennis development. They are all highly skilled, friendly, welcoming and deliver fun and informative lessons.

Our junior tennis coaching programme is aware of family time constraints and specifically runs lessons so that families with children of different ages and abilities can attend their lesson at the same time.

WHAT TO EXPECT IN YOUR LESSON
Blue Ball Lessons will teach the following skills:

  • Blue Ball Hotshots is aimed at 3-5 year olds.

Movement and Spatial Awareness:

Learn to move in different ways, such as:

  • Running, jumping, striding, leaping, small stepping,hopping, skipping, side stepping, side skipping, low and high movement.
  • Learn how to combine and switch different movements.
  • Learn how to move in different areas of the court.
  • Learn awareness of the lines on the court and the space of the court.
  • Movement drills will be fun and game based.
  • Games will include the racquet and ball and without the racquet and ball.

Tracking:

  • Learn how to track the speed and depth of moving balls.
  • Have fun playing game based exercises.

Throwing and Catching:

  • Learn proper throwing and catching techniques. Both are important skills
    for tennis, but also many other sports.
  • Your child will be taught the correct technique to throw and catch.
  • Learn how throwing and catching supports hand eye coordination, balance, focus, spatial awareness, depth perception.

Forehand & Backhand:

  • Basic swing patterns will be taught and children will have the chance to hit many
    balls during their lesson.

Skills Progression

  • Skills will be taught in a fun, game based and inclusive environment.
  • Children will be confident to complete all skills proficiently.
  • Children will be competent enough to progress to RED BALL HOTSHOTS.

Simple Serving:

  • Introduction to the serve and understanding that it starts off a tennis point.

  • Balancing exercises with the racquet and ball will be used regularly.

  • Children will learn how to track the speed and depth of moving balls in fun game
    based exercises.

  • Children will learn how to throw and catch which in turn also helps hand eye coordination, balance and focus.
  • Children learn that controlling direction when throwing is important.

Basic forehand and backhand volley:

  • Introduction to the volley and the basic technique of volleying.

  • 5-7 year olds.

  • 60 minutes.

Green Ball Lessons will teach the following skills:
Movement, Balance and Spatial Awareness:

  • Combination of movements including running, side skipping, cross over steps,
    hopping, skipping, backwards running and jumping.
  • Children will be moving through
    different areas of the court and becoming aware of the lines on the court and the
    space of the court relative to a green ball court.
  • Movement drills will all be in a fun game based environment and may be used with
    and without the racquet and ball. Balancing & skills based exercises with the racquet and ball will be used regularly.

Tracking:

  • Children will learn how to track the speed and depth of moving balls in fun game
    based exercises.

Throwing and Catching:

  • Both important skills for tennis and many other sports. Children will learn how to throw and catch which in turn also helps hand eye coordination, balance and focus.
    Controlling direction and depth with the throw is becoming significantly more
    important.

Introducing and Improving Topspin Forehand and Backhand:

  • Basic topspin swing patterns will be taught and children will have the chance to hit many balls during their lesson to develop all the technical skills to progress to the REGULAR YELLOW BALL STAGE.
  • We will be teaching direction and depth of shots specific to the areas of a green ball court (green ball court is the same size as a normal sized tennis court).

Basic Forehand and Backhand Volley:

  • Improving both the forehand and backhand volleys and the general technique.

Overhead Smash:

  • Introduction to the overhead smash.

1st and 2nd Serve:

  • Improving the serve and understanding that it starts off a tennis point.
  • Able to direct the serve crosscourt into a service box.
  • Know the difference between a first serve and second serve.
  • Learn the correct grip and technique for the serve.

Scoring:

  • Students will learn how to score, 15, 30, 40, game etc.

WHAT TO EXPECT IN YOUR LESSON
  • Lesson & Play is aimed at children aged 6 -12 who want skills and practise learn matchplay.
  • First 45 mins is lesson followed by 45 mins of play.
  • Court sizes & groups will be modified to suit the level of players.

Lesson & Play sessions will teach the following skills:

  • During the first 45 mins children will learn all the skills necessary to start a rally with either a serve or a bounce forehand serve.
  • Forehand, Backhand, volleys, smashes & serving technique all covered in first 45 mins.
  • Some fun game based activities whilst learning technique.
  • During the 2 nd 45 mins of the lesson children will learn how to serve, rally, score & play.
  • There will be singles and doubles points and mini matches played each session.
  • Children will learn both regular scoring formats and Fast 4 formats.
  • Tennis etiquette will be taught.
Who can join?
  • Children aged 6-16.
How long does Lesson & Play last
  • 90 minutes.

What to expect:

Introduction and Improvement of Topspin Forehand and Backhand:

  • Basic topspin swing patterns will be taught and consolidated.
  • Children will have the chance to hit many balls during their lesson to develop/improve upon all the
    technical skills to progress to a standard whereby they can play a game of tennis.
  • We will be teaching the direction and depth of shots specific to certain areas of the
    court.

Slice Backhand:

  • Introduction to and improvement of the slice backhand.

Forehand and Backhand Volley:

  • Improvement of both the forehand and backhand volleys and the general technique.

Overhead Smash:

  • Introduction to and improvement of the overhead smash.

1st and 2nd Serve:

  • Improvement of the serve and clear understanding that it starts off a tennis point. Able to direct the serve crosscourt into a service box. Know the difference between a first serve and second serve. Learn the correct grip and technique for the serve.
    Learn how to aim the serve into certain areas of the box.

Rallying:

  • A large portion of the lesson will be rallying, which includes technical and tactical improvements of students’ game.

Scoring:

  • Students will learn how to score, 15, 30, 40, game etc. and be able to play a full set of tennis.

Tennis Etiquette:

  • All aspects of tennis etiquette will be taught.

Skills Progression:
Players will have the chance to:

  • Play tennis socially.
  • Play internal matches.
  • Play pennant competition matches.
  • Play tournaments.
  • Join the High Performance Tennis Group.
Who can join?
  • 12+ year olds.
  • Children aged 9+ who have progressed past the green ball level.
  • Squad lessons are aimed at students who can competently serve, rally and score.
How long does Yellow Ball Teenage 12+ last?
  • 60 minute group lessons.
  • 90 minute squad lessons.
How much does a session cost?
  • $210 for 10 weeks of 1 hour group lessons.
  • $260 for 10 weeks of 1.5 hour squad lessons.

At PlayTennis we offer a fun and inclusive program. As a Junior you can start playing tennis at any age from the age of 3 upwards, whatever your skill level. Look at our Junior PlayTennis Progression diagram to see what is available to you at each stage of tennis learning.

Junior age 3-5 blue ball hotshots

BLUE BALL

  • Oversized balls with 25% compression.
  • Lowest bouncing balls - relevant to child's height.
  • Balls travel slower through the air.
  • Ideal for beginners and children between 3 and 5 years (approx).

  • We encourage all abilities and adapt accordingly.
  • You can start at age 3 and progress through the stages offered.
  • If you are older, with little or no tennis experience, or haven't played for a long time, you will find a comfortable entry point among other players of your age and skill level.

MINI TOTS TENNIS HOLIDAY PROGRAM

AGE 3 – 5 YRS

Introducing tennis through a range of ball skills, coordination exercises and fun games! Sign up for 1, 2 or all days.

COST : $20 per day

WHEN : 9am – 10am every day of holiday camp

WHERE : Mt Lawley Tennis Club

Our aim is to get you playing tennis! In this tennis clinic your child will:
  • Learn all the shots to play a tennis match
  • Learn how to score and tennis etiquette
  • Play some tennis matches in a fun friendly environment.
  • Every player wins a prize!

WHEN : 9AM – 12.00PM

WEEK 3 : Only Wednesday 17/01/24

WEEK 4 : Mon 22/01/24 - Thursday 25/01/24

WHO : Children all levels and ages 6 - 16 We will split the groups up accordingly

WHERE : Mt Lawley Tennis Club

COST : $45 per day (3hrs) $20 for 1hr 9 -10am. Discount 10% for families with 2 or more children

BRING : Hat, sunscreen, morning tea.

BOOKINGS : Must book in advance with Rhys
